This one is a must read. Seriously. And Jenny McCarthy is a pain in the ass. Click the link here and read Squid's excellent post.
People like this piss me off royally. The majority of kids do not "recover" from Autism. They learn to cope, to live, to function. Learn the skills that makes life easier for all involved. They also generally do not one day get a fucking therapeutic foot bath and magically become "normal." And why the hell would you even want to make your child into your idea of "normal"?
This recovery crap makes it sound like Jaymes is broken, like he's diseased and needs to be fixed. Sure, he needs help, we're working on that. But I don't want to turn him into some little clone of what I think a "normal" child should be. I love Jaymes for who he is, meltdowns and odd behaviors included.
As for Jenny's situation, it's awfully easy to lecture people on how your child can be "recovered" if you do this, this, and this... She isn't living off $1000 a month, scraping by to pay bills and basics. She's got a ton of cash to throw around for every treatment option she can find, and some things that I would not consider treatment at all, but bullshit to make cash off of desperate parents. (Why hello, crazy chiropractor offering vitamins to cure Jaymes and therapeutic foot baths to cleanse the autism right out of him- you dumbfuck)
Parents, please vaccinate your kids... Please don't let the rabid ignorant misinformation of the crazy anti-vaccine folks convince you to forgo vaccinations. If you're concerned, do it slowly, over a period of time, but do it.

Wow. You summed up the comments EXACTLY of our friend who has 3 children - the oldest is very much like Jaymes. They vaccinated both their younger children and advocate vaccinations. Both their younger children are "normal", but they would not change their son to make him "normal". He's 13 or 14 and has bad days and good ones. He can have breakdowns, but also be sweet, loving, and wonderful.
The vaccination issue confounds me. I know a family with six children, none of whom have been vaccinated. They range in age from 3 to 15. Three are autistic and one is on the spectrum somewhere.
My son is deaf (now an adult who has a cochlear implant), and I can relate to your comments about being happy with Jaymes to be Jaymes. I've always felt the same way about my son. Some things were harder for him because of his disability, but at the same time, it was a gift because of the things we learned and experienced that we would not have otherwise.
Another thing...about vaccinations. One time, I crossed paths with a woman who was very proud to have left her child unvaccinated. I mentioned that she owed a debt of gratitude to those of us who do vaccinate our kids, because of the concept of "herd immunity." She told me I was a mindless sheep who just blindly does what I am told to do. Something we will be seeing in the future, sadly, will be newborns with defects due to mothers catching measles during pregnancy...because THEIR mothers don't vaccinate.
To Slice- you'd think that family would catch on to the fact that it is not the vaccinations causing Autism, if their kids are autistic and were not vaccinated.... You'd think.
To Truth: Good for you. If looking out for our kids (and other's) welfare, by all means, i'll be a mindless sheep.
Hi,
Jenny McCarthy might not sound too bright about all of this but she's trying. She helps gain publicity so that's a good thing.
Will you take a look at this group and see what people say who are curing their autistic kids for almost free by listening to the man who invented chelation for autism?

Chelation does work but it works best if you can start doing it while your son is still young.
Honestly, I feel like any awareness Jenny is raising is being overshadowed by the idiotic comments she makes...
As for chelation. I don't really know much about it, other than that Medicaid will not pay for it, and that Jaymes' specialists have advised against it. As far as how its done, no clue. I know it removes heavy metals? But beyond that... Yeah.
I assumed it fell into that DAN! stuff category, but never really researched it as it's not an option due to medicaid.
Ok, so I just went off and read up on chelation...
For something with zero scientific proof that it does anything for Autistic kids, that is so invasive and potentially harmful.... No way would i even consider it. Kudos to the medicaid system for saying they will not pay for chelation for Autism.
Forsam, I do appreciate your comments though, you prompted me to actually read up on something I'd been meaning to for quite some time. Sometimes I need a little prodding to get up and read!
i am glad that you're having success with your son, and I wish you both the best.
I was actually wondering why you still refer to your son as a toddler? He's 5, or almost 5, yes? That's well past the toddler age.
I've been reading your blog for a while now, and I've always meant to ask that, lol.
He'll be 5 in December.. I guess it's just habit. That and cognitively, he really is still a toddler. I'll need to work on that I suppose.
I still call him my little snugglepuff baby too though.... He's always be my little guy.
